After taking a hiatus in 2014, I am blogging the LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar again. This is my third time, and I thought it would be appropriate with the new Star Wars movie coming out later this month. Each day, I riff a little bit on a (perceived) connection between Advent and whatever the LEGO Star Wars mini build is for the day.

This is meant to be lighthearted and fun.

Is this the droid  you are looking for? It’s an Assassin Droid, but is it the IG-86 model or the IG-88 model? (Or, did you even know there were different models?!) You might have seen IG-88 in The Empire Strikes Back when Darth Vader was talking to various bounty hunters about tracking down the Millennium Falcon. Still, it’s core purpose was to kill.

The threat and reality of death was always present in Jesus’ life. When he was a newborn, his family needed to escape to Egypt so he would not be killed by Herod the Great. (Matthew 2:13-23) Throughout his public ministry, he was under threat of death. At the outset of his public ministry, when in Nazareth, he quoted a prophecy from the Book of Isaiah. Jesus went on to say how the words of Isaiah were fulfilled in Him, and the audience was ready to throw Him over a cliff. (Luke 4:16-30) The Pharisees, the religious leaders, were constantly plotting to take down Jesus since He undermined their abuses and set people free. (Mark 3:1-6)

Ultimately, Jesus would allow Himself to be caught by them. It is why Jesus came to Earth, why He was born in a manager nearly 2,000 years ago. Jesus came to die, so through His death we would not experience eternal death. Jesus defeated death when he resurrected from His own death. The threats of others were ever-present, and yet Jesus lovingly and graciously endured them for our sake.

Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? (Matthew 16:24-26)

Jesus has led the way through his example, and when we do so a better, and eternal, life await. There will be big and small threats when we follow Jesus, but they do not compare to what awaits those who follow Jesus.
