After taking a hiatus in 2014, I am blogging the LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar again. This is my third time, and I thought it would be appropriate with the new Star Wars movie coming out later this month. Each day, I riff a little bit on a (perceived) connection between Advent and whatever the LEGO Star Wars mini build is for the day.

This is meant to be lighthearted and fun.

The Ewok Warrior, a fearsome foe despite its size and stone-age technological advancement. When the Battle of Endor commenced, the Ewoks adapted quickly to the reality of the battle’s environment and technology in a winning effort. This may have been surprising to the Empire who saw the one meter tall beings as beneath them, but the Ewok warriors responded well to the pressure.

No one knows for certain her age, but the best guess is that Mary was around age 12 to 15 when she became pregnant with Jesus. The news was a bit of a shock to Mary.

And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!” But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. (Luke 1:28-29)

You are barely a teenage girl, living in a lowly community, and your life’s plans and dreams completely dissipate in the blink of an eye. You are under threat of death because of being perceived as an adulterer. You could lose everything. How might you respond to this tidal wave of change?

And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her. (Luke 1:38)

Mary’s response is amazingly mature and strong. Quickly, she adapted to the changes in her life and responded wisely beyond her years. I think a freakout would have been understood, and that may have happened later and we don’t know about it. What we do know is she bravely walked the path ahead of her now.

Sometimes life unexpectedly changes on us in a negative way. We can go about things like nothing has changed, but we’d be in denial and be the fool. Or, we can steel ourselves, adapt, and respond in a way that could lead to us overcoming the situation. The Ewok warriors were not intimidated by the odds and were able to overcome them in the end. Mary’s life was turned upside-down, and yet she embraced the change God had thrust upon her. By Mary’s example, we can take strength in knowing that no matter what we may face in life we don’t have to be defeated by it.
