As I mentioned in yesterday’s recap of Days 1-12, George Lucas and friends know people will buy their Star Wars trinkets…even if it is lame. Day 13 brings us a minifigure, a Battle Droid minifinigure. Last year, there was also a Battle Droid minifigure.* Lame. Changing some of the color from this year’s Battle Droid does not make up for the fact you put the same mini figure, and a lame one at that, in the set again. Plus, we had a similar droid earlier in the calendar. How many different Star Wars characters are there? I know there are some useless Star Wars figures, but there could have been something better than the same Battle Droid.
So, here’s what I said last year when the Battle Droid was opened on Day 6. Enjoy.
When this started, I thought there would be days where it would be a bit difficult to make a connection between Star Wars and the Nativity. Today is one of those days.
The Battle Droid. The cheap imitation, that is actually a forebearer, to the Storm Trooper.
I did a little word association with the Battle Droid, and came up with sheep.
Sheep are a theme in the Bible, and sheep were the first mammal to be cloned. So we have some connections there.
Sheep and shepherds are present at the Nativity, but I’m guessing we will discuss a connection with shepherds, more overtly, on another day.
Jesus, along with King David, is referred to as a shepherd, and one of the reasons he came into this world was to be a shepherd to his sheep. In John 10:1-18, Jesus calls himself the Good Shepherd.
When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. —Matthew 9:36 (ESV)
Battle Droids are clueless. The stereotype of sheep? They are clueless. Both find comfort in their pack. The saying “strike the shepherd and the sheep will scatter” is found in the Books of Zechariah and Matthew. If you strike the central computer running the Battle Droids, they are deactivated.
One of the many great things about Jesus is he came into the world to rescue his lost sheep. If a Battle Droid is lost or hurt? It is replaced. Thanks goodness God doesn’t have that mindset with us.
