As we count down the days toward Christmas, with help from the LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar, I want to say thanks again for reading this. It’s been fun to write.
Today we have the Rebel Trooper.
The Rebel Troopers were comprised of anyone from across the galaxy, they were from all walks of life. It’s no wonder they were sometimes referred to as “rebel scum” by the Galactic Empire. I mean, do you think this guy is frightening any stormtrooper?
No, not at all.
The Rebel Troopers were a makeshift band of individuals, united only by their mission. The mission of overthrowing the evil Galactic Empire and restoring the galaxy to how it was before Emperor Palpatine’s totalitarian regime.
Christianity has a weird composition of people that comprise it. Back in 1989, there was a movie called Dream Team about a group of mental hospital patients accidentally let loose in New York City after their doctor is knocked unconscious and taken to a hospital. They have to work together, in a place that was foreign to them, and overcome each of their idiosyncrasies. In 1995, I was part of a team that went to the nation of Belarus to do missions and humanitarian work. Our team was comprised of some “illogical” people to say the least. For most of our time in Belarus, I joked with one of my good friends on the trip that our team was the “Dream Team”. There was a lot of conflict on the team, unique personalities with a lot of diverse backgrounds, we were young and immature, but we had to work together to accomplish the tasks at hand in a place that was foreign to us.
Christians are “the Church”. And think about who we are that comprise it? Just talking about me, I’m a former porn addict from the state of Nebraska that is married and a father of four. I didn’t go to college after high school, and I’m from a dysfunctional family.
And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. –Luke 2:10 (ESV)
For all the people. It isn’t just for the elite, the royals, or the wealthy of the world. Jesus is the good news for all the people of the world.
And what a people we are. Murderers, idolaters, pornographers, adulterers, embezzlers…failures. We have our own version of “rebel scum”, we are called the “scum of the world” according to 1 Corinthians 4:13.
The crazy thing? Christians are the Dream Team to the world.
To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. —Colossians 1:27 (ESV)
Christ in us, the hope of glory. Wow.
