Now a third of the way through the advent calendar, and it continues to be fun.
Today, we open up to find a mini Vulture Droid. Really, it’s a Variable Geometry Self-Propelled Battle Droid, Mark I, but Vulture Droid is much simpler.
Much like their Battle Droid brethren, Vulture Droids were designed to kill.
In thinking about the Vulture Droid and Advent, I focused in on the word vulture. While many love the story of the Nativity, there is a big hangup for many who doubt or do not believe in it. That would be the virgin birth.
In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!” But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God. —Luke 1:26-35 (ESV)
It is attributed to Larry King that he wishes he could interview Jesus so he could ask him if he was virgin-born. Why? “The answer to that question would define history for me.”
People do not doubt the historical Jesus, and that he was an amazing teacher. Many people will say they respect the teaching of Jesus. You know, the ones about “love” and “not judging”. Everyone loves that. It’s when you dig deeper into Christ’s life that people start to circle and explain, in essence, why they really don’t believe/follow/respect Jesus.
Is Jesus just a man, or is he the Christ?
One who did believe in the virgin birth was Joseph. Not much is known about him, but he responded in love toward Mary. He believed God when everyone around him probably considered him a fool for staying with Mary. Mary and Joseph probably both experienced people circling them, ready to pounce. Yet they endured, Jesus was born, and his earthly parents raised a King.
When George Lucas wrote the back story for the Chosen One, Anakin Skywalker, what did he do to separate him from the rest? One thing was to give him a supernatural birth in which he was conceived without a human father. The inspiration for this storyline? Jesus.
