I get asked about Foursquare a lot as it gains popularity. What is it? A location-based social network that also doubles as a game. Who uses it? Well, this stat will shed some light.

When I was at the Berkshire Hathaway Annual Shareholder Meeting, I checked in on Foursquare. There were nearly 40,000 people in for the meeting. At any given point throughout the day, there were 10-14 people checked in at the Qwest. 40,000 people, and let’s say 15 people checked in at the same time.

Tonight, at the Big Omaha kickoff at Slowdown, there are a couple hundred people in attendance. Let’s say 400, since that’s 1% of the Berkshire meeting. There have been over 70 people that checked in there at the same time.

Once again…
BRK2010 – 40,000 people / 15 checked in
Big Omaha 2010 – 400 people / 75 checked in

When I went to BRK2010, I thought for sure I’d get the Foursquare Swarm Badge because there were so many people there. No, I get the badge at an event with 1% the attendance of BRK2010.

Draw your own conclusions about who uses it.
